Mastering Touch

these NCBTMB workshops earn 16 credits.

Mastering Touch is a specialized workshop providing massage therapist with 16 CE credits through the nationally approved provider NCBTMB.

This workshop takes bodywork to a whole other level. We use a holistic and integrative approach to developing a therapeutic massage, by developing an intuitive understanding of the body.

Each part of the body requires different touch, a different modality, depending on what body challenges that part is experiencing. As we develop the sensitivity in our hands, and awareness of the body we begin to use varying modalities with maximum results.

The key is to develop the capacity to listen to the body. This coupled with your present moment awareness and attentiveness with your client will change how your client feels and how the client experiences the session.

 Mastering Touch

Myofascial Mobilization and Massage:

Fascia is this web-like tissue that covers every part of the body. Around muscles, organs, veins, arteries, tendons, ligaments …. everything to create interconnectedness throughout the body.

Through slow, sustained, light pressure we create a melting affect helping these tissues to soften.

John Barnes says  " This essential "time element" has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate. "

The depth to which this modality works is miraculous. It relates to cellular consciousness and a science we are still learning to embrace.

Compression Stretching and Isometric Stretching:

Compression stretching is done by putting the muscle under tension while using effleurage along that muscle, or some times using stripping techniques to help the muscle relax and elongate.

Isometric stretching is when muscular contractions occur without movement of the involved parts of the body. This is held for a count of 5. When client relaxes the practitioner finds the new resistance point by stretching that muscle until feeling resistance.

Below are the key modalities that Mastering Touch uses to develop a well-rounded therapeutic session.

Deep tissue massage focuses on re-aligning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck, shoulders, upper and low back pain as well as leg muscle tightness.

The movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of adhesions and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

It helps post run soreness, faster recover, injury preventions, better O2 uptake, mobilizes scar tissue and increases flexibility and mobility.

Deep Tissue
Active/Passive Stretching:

Both of these types of stretches are facilitated by the therapist, however in the passive stretching the client is completely relaxed while the therapist performs the stretch.

Because the muscles are relaxed it can be very effective in surpassing the clients restrictions, improving range of motion and developing more mobility in the body.

Due to the nature of this modality, it allows to reach places that other massage modalities never reach.

The other component to an exceptional therapeutic session . . .

Just as important as the physical components of a therapeutic massage is the energetic component that creates the rapport between the client and therapist. It creates smoothness in the communication and interaction between the two.

This connection is maintained during the session through our intention and focus with our client. Our mental disposition affects the person we are working on so it is necessary to develop a way to remain present with our clients. This is the key to offering an amazing massage.

This present moment awareness is maintained through what we call a ‘mantra’, this is a sanskrit word that means vehicle for the mind. The mind always needs something to do, it’s always thinking and analyzing, regurgitating repeated thoughts.

By creating our own unique way that keeps us connected to the person we are working on, like a mantra, we stay in the present moment with our clients.
